BEST VALUE MICROWAVE TOASTER OVEN COMBO

If all you need in a microwave toaster oven combo is a smallish sized unit that can cook a maximum of one or two servings, the Panasonic NB-G110P Flash Xpress Toaster Oven is cheaper than our top pick and can cook food almost as well.

Its quirky design is not to everyone’s taste and it lacks the capacity of the Samsung, but the Panasonic outperforms many of its more expensive competitors and takes up less countertop space.

Buying Guide and Advice

What is a Microwave Toaster Oven Combo?

A microwave toaster oven combo gives you the option to cook foods that are best suited for a toaster or convection oven as well as ones that require microwaving.  If you are reading this article you are probably asking yourself “what are the pros and cons of buying a microwave toaster oven combo?”

That’s an important question and one you need to fully understand before making a buying decision as there are a few pitfalls you need to be aware of if you do decide to choose the combo option.

Microwave Toaster Oven Combo Pros & Cons

PROS:
  • Saves Space – If your kitchen is anything like mine then space is at a premium and once you have an electric grill, microwave, pressure cooker and toaster oven there just isn’t much room to fit everything in. A microwave toaster oven combo is a practical way to save kitchen space.
  • Combination Cooking – having a combo unit allows you to take advantage of combination cooking options such as microwave-grilling or microwave-convection cooking. This allows you to, for example, quickly cook your steak pot pie using the microwave feature then finish it with the grill to give a nice crispy crust.
  • Saves Money – Buying a microwave toaster oven combo not only saves you space in your kitchen, it can also save you money which is certainly an added bonus!

CONS:
  • Power Output – a typical microwave toaster oven combo will have a power output of around 1,000 watts, which is lower than most standalone microwave or toaster ovens on the market today.
  • Height Limitations – most combo units require between 8 and 12 inches of height clearance. Depending on the design of your kitchen, you may find it difficult to fit one into your existing cabinet space.

What to Look for in a Microwave Toaster Oven Combo

Perhaps at one time all microwave toaster oven combinations were created equal, but that’s certainly not true in today’s market.  There are a variety of good and bad models in production today and it’s important that you know what to look out when choosing the best option for you:

  • Cooking power: we recommend choosing a unit with a minimum power rating of 950 watts to ensure your food will be heated and cooked quickly.
  • Capacity: the required capacity will depend on your requirements, if you plan to cook more than just a small pizza or few slices of toast we would recommend an interior capacity of at least 1 cubic foot.
  • Dimensions: Kitchen countertop space is always at a premium and you need to check carefully that the unit you choose will fit nicely in your kitchen, while allowing enough adjacent space to ensure it does not overheat while cooking.
  • Sturdy construction and quality materials: most microwave toaster oven combos on the market today are surprisingly durable, you should read customer reviews before purchasing as some models have had issues with door opening mechanisms failing.
  • Stylish design: you want to choose a model that has an aesthetic you like and one which will look great in your kitchen.

Stylish Design!

A solid-performing microwave toaster oven combination

PROS
  • Stylish Design
  • Ceramic Interior
  • Digital Control Panel
  • Large Capacity
CONS
  • Not easy to see food cooking
  • Requires larger countertop space

The Samsung MG14H3020CM is a modern, stylish microwave toaster oven combo that would look great in almost any kitchen.

It includes a grilling element which elegantly combines the toasting capabilities of a regular toaster oven with the speed and convenience of a microwave, allowing you to prepare bacon, fish, pizza and any other foods which require a crispy finish for a better taste – something that is not possible with a conventional microwave.

The Samsung has a 1.4 cubic foot internal capacity and is the largest microwave toaster oven combo we tested, which is great because it allows you to cook so much more than just a few slices of toast or a small 9” pizza.  The exterior measures 12.3 by 21.9 by 18 inches and weighs 41.9 pounds.

Design and Features

The Samsung MG14H3020CM has a very modern aesthetic with an asymmetric shape and shiny mirror design which is very neutral and is sure to look good in almost any kitchen.  The ceramic enamel interior is both stain and scratch resistant, and can be easily wiped down after use.

We really liked the digital control panel with LED display because, combined with the cooking presets and choice of ten different power levels, it takes all the guesswork out of cooking everything from poultry to popcorn.

Other key features to note are the 1.4 cubic foot internal capacity and the grilling elements located at the top of the oven cavity which is perfect for making your food crispy and crunchy when you need to.

Performance

The Samsung has a 950 watts power rating, which is about average for a microwave toaster oven combo.  We tested the Samsung’s performance rigorously including cooking pizzas, bagels, fish, chicken, toast and even popcorn.  It performed consistently well during all the tests and we found the control panel and presets very intuitive and easy to use.

Flaws but not Deal Breakers

No microwave toaster oven combo is perfect, and there were a few flaws we found with the Samsung:

While we love the stylish design we found that the mirror finish on the exterior made it more difficult to see the food while it is cooking.

Also, although we really like the larger capacity of the Samsung it is worth bearing in mind that it may not be suitable for smaller kitchens with limited countertop space (in which case we would recommend the Panasonic Flash Xpress).

One final word of caution to note is that we note from Amazon customer reviews some people experienced issues with the door opening mechanism not functioning properly.  We tested the Samsung at length and did not have the same problem but we thought it only fair to highlight in this review.

Verdict

The Samsung is a stylishly designed microwave toaster oven combo which performed well.  We really liked the larger capacity as it gave plenty of room to cook more than just a small pizza or few slices of toast, and with the digital control panel and presets we found it a cinch to use.

For these reasons, we rated the Samsung as the Best Microwave Toaster Oven Combo.

Great Performer!

Best Value Microwave Toaster Oven Combo

PROS
  • Cooking Perfomance
  • Great Value
  • Easy to Use
  • Compact Design
CONS
  • Not a Very Stylish Design
  • Limited Capacity

The Panasonic Flash Xpress offers great cooking performance at a budget price.  In fact, it outperformed many of the more expensive models we tested for this review thanks to the Panasonic “infrared heating technology” which quickly heats and cooks the food.

Panasonic pioneered the use of infrared heating technology in microwave toaster ovens. Unlike toaster ovens that use heating elements and microwave ovens that use electromagnetic wave, the Panasonic uses infrared technology to quickly heat and cook food.

It comes with a 9” by 9” cooking pan, non-adjustable cooking rack, interior light, removable crumb tray and a limited one year warranty.

The Panasonic has a 0.23 cubic foot internal capacity and is the smallest microwave toaster oven combo we tested, ideal for cooking one or two meal servings and taking up limited countertop space but may not be large enough if you wish to cook more than say a 9” pizza.  The exterior measures 13 by 12 by 10.25 inches and the Panasonic Flash Xpress weighs 7.5 pounds.

Design and Features

The Panasonic has a quirky design which takes some getting used to but which did grow on us over time.  It has a very “retro” style and features analogue, rather than digital, controls which although not our preferred option actually worked okay once we got used to it.

The key feature of the Panasonic Flash Xpress is the proprietary “double infrared heating” technology which eliminates the need to preheat and means it can cook food up to 40% faster than traditional toaster ovens.

One other feature we particularly liked was the presets because it makes cooking so simple.  The Panasonic has a range of presets including quick reheat, toast, frozen pizza, frozen waffle, frozen hash brown and reheat roll.

Performance

The Panasonic is super easy to operate and with only one rack height there is no risk of placing your food too close or far from the heating elements.  All you have to do is place your food in the oven, choose the appropriate preset and presto!

We tested by cooking a range of foods including frozen pizza, roasted chicken drumsticks, frozen waffles and toast.  Here’s a summary of how it performed:

  • The frozen pizza preset worked superbly with nicely melted cheese, evenly cooked and the crust was neither too chewy nor too hard.
  • The Panasonic was actually the best performing microwave toaster oven combo for making toast.  It can cook up to four slices at one time and each of the four slices was evenly toasted when using the light, medium and dark settings.
  • The waffles were cooked perfectly and all it took was the touch of a preset button.
  • For the chicken drumsticks we actually found that the Panasonic performed too well resulting in burnt drumsticks on our first attempt. What we discovered by trial and error was that you need to cook for less than the recommended time, in our case this meant instead of cooking for 50 minutes the optimum cooking time was 40 minutes.

Flaws but not Deal Breakers

The main gripe our testers had was the slightly odd-looking (think old fm/am radio tuner) temperature dial which is dual-scale giving temperatures in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.  While that in itself is not an issue, we found that if you are cooking in Fahrenheit you can often not get the exact temperature you wish e.g. 390 deg F is the closest setting to 400 deg F.

Verdict

If you can look past the quirky design, the Panasonic Flash Xpress microwave toaster oven combo is great value for money and a great space-saver compared to the other models we tested.

Its cooking performance exceeds many of the more expensive models we have tested and thanks to the proprietary double infrared heating technology it can toast or brown your food as well as a traditional toaster oven.

Cuisinart CMW 200

Excellent!

Best Overall Microwave Toaster Oven Combo

PROS
  • Stylish Design
  • Great Value
  • Easy to Use
CONS
  • Power Rating

The Cuisinart CMW 200 is a great microwave toaster oven combo.  It has an excellent range of functionality, is affordably priced and includes a rotating 12 inch glass tray, reversible grill rack, recipe book and a limited 3-year warranty.

It has a 1.2 cubic foot internal capacity, which enables you to cook so much more than just a few slices of toast or a small 9” pizza.  The exterior measures 20.4 by 18.9 by 12.4 inches and weighs 41.3 pounds.

Note: if you are installing this in a cabinet you should leave a minimum of 6 inches clearance behind to allow sufficient ventilation to prevent the Cuisinart from overheating.

Design and Features

The Cuisinart CMW 200 has a classy stainless steel exterior and dark tinted glass which would look good in most kitchens.  It also has a stainless steel interior which we really liked because it’s easy to sanitize and doesn’t absorb any food odours.

Similar to the Samsung, it has an LCD display, touchpad controls and a range of presets: fresh vegetable, cake, popcorn, pizza, roast chicken, frozen vegetable, beverage and potato.

One unique feature of the Cuisinart CMW 200 is the multi-stage cooking option which automatically shifts from one function to another.  This allows you, for example, to defrost a casserole for 12 minutes, bake in the microwave for 5 minutes and finally grill for 1 minute to melt the cheese and top-brown your casserole.

Performance

The Cuisinart CMW 200 performed well during testing, although we felt that despite the 1,000 watt power output rating it was a little lacking at times in terms of cooking power compared to the other models tested and sometimes food took a little longer to cook.

The presets are great and in particular we found the convection baking and defrost functions to be most impressive and useful:

  • Convection baking: this function cooks food faster and more evenly while ensuring no frozen centres or burned edges.  The Cuisinart CMW 200 has the added advantage that it can roast or bake with or without the microwave function giving you maximum flexibility
  • Defrost: there are two convenient defrost functions which allow you to defrost your food by weight or time.

Verdict

The Cuisinart CMW 200 is a good all-round microwave toaster oven combo.  We really liked the multi-stage cooking option for cooking foods such as casseroles and have not seen this feature on any competitor brands.

Considering the stylish design, large capacity and good functionality this is a great buy at $180.
